HiFU (High intensity focused ultrasound)

HIFU Skin Tightening High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) is a relatively new cosmetic treatment for skin tightening that some consider a noninvasive and painless replacement for facelifts. It uses ultrasound energy to encourage the production of collagen, which results in firmer skin.  HIFU is most widely known for its use in treating tumors. The first reported use of HIFU for aesthetic use was in 2008.  High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound for the Treatment of wrinkles and skin laxity in facial areas.  

HIFU was then approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2009 for brow lifts. The device was also cleared by the FDA in 2014 to improve lines and wrinkles of the upper chest and neckline (décolletage).  

HIFU for skin tightening is known as an optimal treatment for the face as well as other areas of the body where excess fat exists, such as the abdomen, buttocks, neckline, and thighs.  It increases collagen production to tighten the skin and help improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. HIFU is also used to destroy stubborn fat cells while producing firmer skin.  

Is HIFU surgery? 

No, HIFU is a non-surgical procedure that targets the skin and support layers below it without cutting or disrupting the skin’s surface at all.  

What is unique about this procedure? HIFU is the only non-invasive treatment that can specifically target the deep foundation below the skin that is addressed in cosmetic surgery without cutting or disrupting the surface of the skin.  

Is there any downtime? HIFU is an entirely non-invasive procedure and as such, there is no downtime. You are able to return to your normal activities right away, and there are no special measures you need to take.  

Is HIFU safe? The procedure has been shown to be safe in several clinical studies, and tens of thousands of treatments performed already worldwide. In addition, ultrasound energy has a proven track record in various disciplines of medicine for more than 50 years.  

Will I feel the ultrasound during the treatment? Yes. What you are feeling during the treatment is actually tiny amounts of focused ultrasound energy being deposited below the skin’s surface.  Some patients note some discomfort while the ultrasound energy is being delivered, however, it’s temporary and a positive signal that the collagen-building process has been initiated.  Comfort thresholds vary from patient to patient, but there can be some discomfort while the ultrasound energy is being delivered.

Please wear no make up or moisturizer on day of treatment. We will use gel with the HiFU treatment. You can use light moisturizer after treatment, and avoid direct sunlight for a few days.
